The world is falling apart. Climate change is accelerating, and the climate-related disasters are increasing dramatically. The political powers, as seen in the Ukraine-Russia war, are more concerned with attacking and dominating their enemies then addressing climate change, or the many social problems of their citizens. Nuclear threats have been made in both directions, and if ever carried out, would end civilization. It seems our leaders are incapable of solving any of the existential problems facing humanity. What does bible prophecy have to say about our time?
In Revelation 12:7-9, Satan and his demon angels lose the war in heaven against Michael the Archangel and his armies, and are cast down to the earth. The prophecy warns us that, "the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has only a short time” (v12b). The devil is the "ruler of this world" (John 12:31; Eph 6:12). It is he who controls the governments of this world--to the extent that they submit to him--consciously or otherwise. He can read Scripture and sees his end coming soon, so he is thrashing out and it seems, he intends to destroy humanity rather than lose--either through accelerating climate change, nuclear war, or both. It is the most dangerous time in earth's history. It is only now that the prophecy in Revelation 11:18 could be fulfilled: "God will destroy those destroying the earth." This is the only time in history where humans have the ability to destroy the planet's ability to support life. And if that is gone, humans will follow shortly after.
Daniel 11:40-45 is the last section of this chapter's prophecy before Michael "stands up" and puts an end to Satan's rulership. There will be, "a time of distress such as never occurred since there was a nation until that time; and at that time your people, everyone who is found written in the book, will be rescued" (Dan 12:1b). But just prior to this, the prophecy speaks of the domination of the Middle East and its treasures (i.e., oil) by the King of the North--which I believe is the West led by Anglo-America. Anglo-America is also the two-horned Lamb Beast of Revelation 13:11-18. In the first half of the 20th c. it was Britain that dominated the Middle East. In the second half of the 20th c. it was America, now the senior partner in this dual world power. And it is this power which now represents Rome, the enemy of God's people (Rev 13:12).
But America is now losing in the Middle East. Iran, in 1979, threw out the Shah, an American oil stooge, and built an Islamic democratic theocracy in opposition to the West. The Iraq war of 2003 was a disaster. The US withdrawal from Afghanistan was a train wreck and a travesty. The Iraqi government now wants the US military bases out of their country. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is making deals with Russia. The Saudis, along with OPEC+ (which includes Russia) are now standing up to US bullying and are cutting their oil production, which raises the price of oil. This will harm America and affect Biden and the Democrats' midterm election prospects. Biden has threatened the Saudis, who receive massive military aid from the US, but they are unmoved. Turkey, a NATO member and supposed ally of America, is also making energy deals with Russia directly, and is not worried about US retaliation. Even France, a staunch NATO ally, is no longer rolling over when Uncle Sam snaps his fingers. Biden stabbed France in the back when he got Australia to cancel their 50 billion dollar submarine deal and buy US subs instead. France has not forgotten this. More and more of the world is standing up to Anglo-America's bullying. What is going on prophetically?
In Daniel Chapter 11, after the King of the North (Anglo-America) completes his conquest of the Middle East (v40-43), he gets some bad news in verses 44-45:
But rumors from the East and from the North will disturb him, and he will go forth with great wrath to destroy and annihilate many. He will pitch the tents of his royal pavilion between the seas and the beautiful Holy Mountain; yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him.
To the East of Israel is China and Iran; to the North is Russia. These powers, along with their allies, are conspiring to reduce America and its mighty dollar to just another major player in a multi-polar world. But America, since the end of WWII, wants to be world ruler, and does not accept anything less. And so it is aggravating the Ukraine war, and resisting peace negotiations to "weaken Russia." It is provoking China by imposing massive sanctions and having American politicians visit Taiwan--warning China that it will defend the island against "Chinese aggression." Of course the real story has nothing to do with 'freedom and democracy' but everything to do with Taiwan supplying two-thirds of the world's computer chips. The US wants to ensure that Taiwan never re-unites with China, and there are even suggestions by a former US national security advisor, to bomb Taiwan rather than see it reunited with the mainland. The US senses its dominant role in the world is slipping away, and it is becoming increasingly angry, paranoid, and violent. Finally,
He will pitch the tents of his royal pavilion between the seas and the beautiful Holy Mountain; yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him (Dan 11:45).
A "royal pavilion" consists of the tents for the entourage political leaders would bring with them when visiting a foreign power in Daniel's time. The modern day equivalent is an embassy. "Between the seas and the beautiful Holy Mountain," means between the Mediterranean and Dead Sea, to the West and East respectively, and Mount Zion to the North. This is the exact location of the modern city of Jerusalem as shown in this map. Donald Trump, against all advice, moved the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in 2018, enraging the Palestinians, who also have a claim to Jerusalem.
"Yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him" (Dan 11:45).
Anglo-American domination of the world since WWII will soon end. "No one will help him," because of his arrogance, bullying, deceit, warmongering, and greed, directed at enemies and friends alike. His allies will no longer support him. The American dollar will lose its value as investment shifts to the East. Anglo-America had it all--vast resources, industrious, educated people, democracy, and religious freedom--but chose to misuse its God-given talents in the greedy pursuit of power by its oligarchs and corporations. It has sown the wind and will reap the whirlwind (Hosea 8:7). For Christians in the West who have eyes to see and ears to hear, it is a time for repentance and prayer. America and Britain, along with the rest of the West, is being judged by God, and Christians should not want to be found on the wrong end of that judgement. Of course God will judge the other powers as well, but Anglo-America seems to be first in line.
In future installments of Signs of the End, we will look at other biblical prophecies that are now in effect as we approach and anticipate the return of Christ and His Kingdom rule of earth.
